In connection with the International Days of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, we will spend the 2 weeks surrounding November 1 & 8 praying for the 10 nations where Christians face the worst persecution. Check back each weekday from October 26 through November 6 for a post focusing our prayer on a particular nation, and consider making prayer for the persecuted church a regular part of your personal worship. “Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated, since you yourselves also are in the body.” (Hebrews 13:3)

#7 – Iran

Flag_of_Iran.svgGovernment: Islamic republic
Leader: Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (supreme leader) / President Hassan Rouhani
Population: 79.4 million
Christians: 450,000 (0.06%)

Persecution Source: Islamic extremism
Other Information: It is illegal for ethnic Persians to be Christians, and any open Christian activity is also banned. Iranian Christians are subject to imprisonment and torture because of their faith. However, it is estimated that the Iranian church is one of the fastest growing churches in the world.

Prayer Points:

  • There are many Christians who are languishing in Iranian prisons, including Pastor Saeed Abedini, a U.S. citizen; pray that they will be released this year
  • That the Iranian leadership might loosen its tight hold on Christian activity
  • That many more will come to the Lord through satellite television and distribution of Bibles
