Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)
In perhaps his final set of instructions to the young pastor Timothy, Paul uses an analogy of a worker presenting his finished product to his master for approval. The work that is to be reviewed is the way he handles the word of truth. John MacArthur explains that being a diligent teacher means that one
gives maximum effort to impart God’s truth as completely, as clearly, and as unambiguously as possible. He gives unreserved commitment to excellence in examining, interpreting, explaining, and applying God’s Word.
In the context of 2 Timothy and the rest of the New Testament, this includes the idea that nothing would be added or taken away from the gospel.
Pray that we would be a church that accurately handles the word of truth—neither adding to or subtracting from the gospel. Pray that we would be faithful in clearly and unambiguously imparting God’s truth. Pray that we would be committed to excellence in examining, interpreting, explaining, and applying God’s Word. Pray especially for Noah as he studies and prepares to preach and teach each week.
