so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God (Colossians 1:10)

So far this week we have prayed that we would grow in our knowledge of the person and work of Jesus Christ and that the gospel would be the basis for our wisdom and understanding. Today we want to pray that we would see the fruit of such prayers being answered. The more we understand Jesus and the gospel, the more our walk (lifestyle or manner of living) will be worthy of him and pleasing to him. It is then that we bear fruit and increase in the knowledge of God. Bearing fruit and increasing in the knowledge of God is not a “works” issue, but a “gospel” issue, as Paul makes clear by using the same language as in Colossians 1:5-6, where he wrote of:

the gospel which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth.

Several commentators believe Paul is alluding to the creation accounts in Genesis, where Adam walked with the Lord, obeyed him, and was fruitful and multiplied. They argue that Paul might be praying for the Christians at Colossae to fulfill their design as new creations (2 Cor. 5:17; Gal. 6:15) in a way that Adam didn’t. This is, of course, one of the purposes of our salvation. In Ephesians 2:10, right after Paul writes that salvation is by grace through faith and not a result of works, he goes on to say,

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

We are not saved by good works, but we are saved to good works.

Pray today, as we have already prayed this week, that our church would be characterized by the gospel. Pray that our actions would be worthy of Christ and pleasing to Christ because they flow out of our understanding of the gospel. Pray that just as Adam walked with the Lord in the Garden of Eden, that we we would walk with the Lord—fellowshipping with him and not hiding from him. Pray that we would bear the fruit of the gospel and increase in our knowledge of God. Pray that we would walk in the good works that God has prepared beforehand for us.
