… that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. (Jn. 17:23)
Jesus prayed that his disciples would be perfected in unity because that unity would be proof of his identity and God’s love. A divided and divisive church contradicts the very message it is called to preach. We will never be the church we are called to be if we are not united.
Pray that our unity would not be based on shared race, ethnicity, language, politics, or interests, but on our shared faith. Pray that we would not trade the supernatural unity forged by the Spirit for mere human unity.
being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. (Eph. 4:3-6)
Pray that we would be united in knowledge of Jesus Christ.
until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. (Eph. 4:13)
Pray that we would be united in love.
Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. (Col. 3:14)
Pray that we would be united in purpose.
make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. (Php. 2:2)
Pray that our unity would testify to Jesus Christ and God’s love for us to the community around us.
